President’s Message:
With Spring Comes the Inspiration of New Life and Growth
Stu Semigran
What if we are part of sparking each other’s growth by inspiring and encouraging one another?
Take a moment to ask yourself: Who inspired me today? Who or what moved or impressed me… opened my mind… touched my heart? What did I experience or learn from them?
What if we learned from everyone – those who gave us a smile or an encouraging word, and those who may have rubbed us the wrong way. If we choose to be students of life, our teachers miraculously appear everywhere in the people and situations we encounter. They appear even through those challenges that seem unfair and stifling. What if we used everything that comes our way for our development and growth: the great, the not so good, and the “awful”? As a wise teacher of mine often said, “What if everything is for you?”
In early March, I had the good fortune to fly up to Sacramento with eight of our high school students and five of our EduCare staff, to be part of the CalSAC Summer and Afterschool Challenge. We spent two days with students, educators, and parents from across California, meeting and talking with congressional leaders to advocate for increased resources for afterschool and summer learning programs for more of California’s young people.
I watched our students outperform all expectations, stepping out in front to speak with senators and legislators, presenting themselves on media outlets, talking in front of the cameras. They were outspoken in sharing the value they have received from these essential programs, and passionate in advocating for funding, so that more students might be afforded the same opportunities and benefits.
Our students came in shy the first day, and they left on fire – on cloud nine – as they realized what strong voices they had, and how impactful their words were. As we encouraged them to step outside of their comfort zones and to be bold in expressing who they were and the importance of their message, our young “ambassadors” further sparked my own enthusiasm for EduCare’s work.
We can choose to support, encourage, and learn from each other. When I feel bothered by or upset with someone, I often step back and ask myself: What if this is my chance to understand, rather than to prove my point of view is right and theirs is wrong? I’ve learned that this is my opportunity to practice slowing down, to ask questions of them that might help me understand their point of view, and to build a greater opening for mutual appreciation.
My invitation this spring is: Let’s aim to inspire, encourage, and lift one another as we consider the choice to use everything that comes our way for our learning and growth!
EduCare Goes to Bulgaria!
Heartset® Education Plants Seeds in Eastern Europe
This April, Stu Semigran, President and Co-Founder of EduCare, and Candace Semigran, Co-Founder of EduCare, were invited to lead a series of workshops and events to introduce the principles of Heartset® Education to schools, parents, and educators in Bulgaria.
Also on their itinerary were two book-signings for Heartset® Education: A Way of Living and Learning, recently translated into Bulgarian. In addition, Stu and Candace made a presentation on Heartset® Education at the Annual International Conference of ECNAIS (European Council of National Associations of Independent Schools). Present at this conference were educational policy makers, school leaders, teachers and students representing Bulgaria, Romania, and the Netherlands.
EduCare Board member and program facilitator, Eldrick Bone, joined Stu and Candace during these two inspiring weeks in Bulgaria. The reception by the hundreds of students, teachers, and parents who participated in the various events and workshops in Bulgaria was wonderfully enthusiastic!
From Sofia to Varna, our key takeway is that children are children wherever they are in the world, and it is a joy and a privilege to reach their hearts and minds. EduCare is thrilled to have visited Bulgaria, and to see the practical, uplifting wisdom of Heartset® Education spreading around the globe!
Highlight on Afterschool:
TUPE Takes Down Tobacco!
Take Down Tobacco is a national day of action, coordinated by Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE). Youth advocates and their communities come together to stand up to Big Tobacco, expose the tricks the industry uses to lure kids into addiction, and call for effective change. This month, 24 EduCare partner schools participated in Take Down Tobacco – positively impacting 29,197 students!
TUPE sponsors events throughout the school year and encourages students to:
Serve as positive role models for their peers
Plan and conduct campaign events to inform their peers and community about the harmful effects of tobacco and cannabis use
Support youth in identifying and adopting healthy alternatives
Our monthly goal is to reach 70% of the school population with education on the risks of smoking – and we've successfully incorporated PA announcements to alert students to the risks of smoking and vaping.
Highlight on ACE:
High Ropes Retreats – and Earth Day!
More than 200 students from both Sylmar Biotech Health & Engineering Magnet and Social Justice Humanitas Academy recently took part in a transformative day in Culver City.
During this very special event, they challenged themselves to go far outside their comfort zones during an exhilarating array of team-building activities – including traversing a challenging ropes course.
These students have been active participants in our ACE Program during their high school years. The ACE Program/Workshops are part of EduCare's innovative approach to social-emotional learning (SEL), which we call Heartset® Education. They empower students to achieve excellence in personal, social, and academic pursuits while building a school culture of empathy and kindness.
On April 10th, our EduCare ACE Initiative & Afterschool teams at Birmingham Community Charter High School hosted an outstanding Earth Day Event.
The event drew a crowd of several hundred students during lunchtime, providing them with a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding of the importance of environmental conservation. A variety of hands-on activities – like planting succulents to take home – encouraged camaraderie and environmental stewardship within the school community. We are proud to see our students taking such active roles in shaping a sustainable future for us all!
Our first year to celebrate…
This year, for the first time, EduCare celebrated March Gladness – and what an exciting month it has been!
It started off with a bang, when we invited students, staff, supporters, and board members to complete a sentence beginning, "I'm glad to be part of EduCare because..." We were blown away by the well over 100 statements of heartfelt gladness, coming from all points of view. From students ("...bringing joy to my life..." and "...making high school better...") to staff ("...the opportunity to be part of their educational journey" and "...creating a brighter future..."), and so many more, the range of comments often brought tears to our eyes.
Honestly, it was tough to determine the ultimate winner as we traversed the month, from Sweet Sixteen to Elite Eight to Final Four. Congratulations to our winner, Diego L., a student in the NOW Academy at RFK Community Schools!
We invite you to visit our Wall of Gladness, where you can enjoy reading all the statements of gladness we received. Thanks to each and every person who participated in March Gladness!
Want even more gladness (and who doesn't)? Check out the video here! We promise you'll be inspired and uplifted.
Volunteers Inspire Students at Career Day
April 12th was Career Day at the School of Public Service at the Diego Rivera Learning Complex! More than two dozen enthusiastic volunteers showed up to talk about their own careers, and to answer students' questions about making choices for themselves.
The event was organized by EduCare's ACE Initiative Site Administrator, Taiz Bonilla, and was a rousing success.
Are you interested in getting involved? To learn about the wide variety of opportunities to provide rewarding support to EduCare's students, email Vanessa Senteno. Thank you!
